Isla Solarte, a special place to get
away from it all, is located about 9 miles off the Caribbean coast of Panama,
one mile to the east of the city of Bocas del Toro (the capitol city of the
province in which Isla Solarte is located), and is just 20 miles south of Costa
Rica's border.
Isla Solarte is approximately three miles long and less
than a half mile across at its widest point.
It is located at 8 1/2 degrees latitude, which places it south of the hurricane
belt. There is no history of Isla Solarte being affected by tropical storms.
Isla Bastimentos protects Isla Solarte from the open Caribbean. The climate
largely resembles that of the Hawaiian Islands, with an average air temperature
in the low 80 degrees...which matches the temperature of the surrounding water.
Isla Solarte experiences approximately 100 inches of rain per year, mostly at
night with occasional short showers seen during the day...again, much like
Hawaii. This accounts for the lush, green vegetation seen on Isla Solarte
throughout the year.
Isla Solarte
is part of an archipelago that finds it's beginnings at Costa Rica's border and
stretches over 100 miles in length along Panama's coastline. The surrounding
area is largely undeveloped, with Bocas del Toro being the center of trade and
cultural activities in the area.
Isla Solarte is home to a
small community of local Indian as well as our Inn. They have a school in the
village that teaches about 50 children of various ages. The people of the
village make there living fishing the waters around the island and supply our
Inn with fish and lobster for our guests. The local people also gather fruits
and vegetables from the rain forest such as limes, mangos, Guava, mandarins,
breadfruit, coconuts and a variety of medicinal herbs. They can teach a visitor
a lot about the surrounding jungle and sea. Some of the carpenters who built
our Inn were men from the village who were trained on our project and now hold
jobs on other construction projects. All in all they are good neighbors and
friends to the Inn.
Solarte is a quiet place. It is the perfect place
to enjoy the sites and sounds of a tropical rain forest or enjoy the under
water world of the coral that surrounds Solarte. It is a place to retreat to
from the excitement of a fun filled day or evening in the town of Bocas or
after a full day of water activities.
Here are some special places and
points of interest to visit while staying at the Solarte del Caribe Inn. We can
provide boat trips to any of these sites.
